DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT PRACTICES: GENDER IDENTITY IN HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS

Diversity provides opportunities for creativity and innovation in organizations. However, studies on gender dynamics in organizations focus, for the most part, on the relationship between men and women, with gaps relating to transgender and transvestite people. Thus, the objective was to construct and validate a questionnaire to evaluate diversity management practices in health organizations with a focus on the gender identity of the transsexual and transvestite population. To this end, a methodological research was structured in two phases: construction of the questionnaire supported by an integrative literature review (LILACS, SCIELO databases and CAPES journals) and validation of the questionnaire by a sample of experts (n=3). The review identified variables that the questionnaire should include to evaluate diversity management practices aimed at the trans and transvestite population. Thus, the information extracted from the 13 articles showed: use of social name/change of civil registration in selection processes, low education, use of bathrooms, changing rooms and uniforms, prejudice and unpreparedness of organizations to deal with transsexuality. Then, 34 items and 7 sub-items, totaling 41 topics were evaluated according to validity and importance using a Likert scale at two moments (t1: post review and t2: post 1st evaluation). At t1, changes were indicated in 13 topics (adaptation of terms and wording). Thus, after applying the suggestions, the t2 evaluation was carried out, where 39 topics (32 items and 7 sub-items) were judged important and valid by 100% of the evaluators. The questionnaire can be applied in different local contexts to evaluate social inclusion and staff education aimed at the trans and transvestite population. Investigating the social markers of difference is important not only for the trans and transvestite population, but for everyone who is excluded from the basic rights to be born, live, work and die in a dignified and satisfactory way, so that effective public policies can be developed.
