Designing a Sustainability Competencies Questionnaire: Insights from a Systematic Literature Review

This article represents the first contribution to a three-part series examining a questionnaire formulation design to evaluate competencies of sustainability. It is imperative that activities which promote effective sustainable development must be addressed. In this sense, all activities aimed at developing competencies for sustainability are essential. The aim of this paper is to initiate a discussion on the development of a questionnaire on competencies for sustainability, which will address the research question of the EduCITY project. Furthermore, the questionnaire will be sufficiently broad to be used in other research contexts and will be accessible to Portuguese speakers. A systematic literature review was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science and Eric to map and understand the research that has already been carried out in this area. This enabled the development of a questionnaire, either ex novo or based on pre-existing. The comprehensive and meticulous review process did not yield the anticipated outcome. However, it did contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the necessity for standardising nomenclatures and, concurrently, facilitated the development of a questionnaire that would align with the initial objectives. To this end, two academic papers have been identified as potential sources of inspiration, which will inform the subsequent stage of research.
