The Bases of the Competing Armaments of Greece - Ottoman Empire, 1833-1866
This study combines the political, military, economic, and diplomatic aspects of war preparation, in order to identify the factors that gave rise to the competitive armaments between Greece and the Ottoman Empire, and to determine the correlation between the competitive armaments and the outbreak of armed confrontations between the two states during the period 1833-1866. Regarding the armament motives and based on the theoretical framework of Buzan and Herring, the article demonstrates that the armaments of Greece and the Ottoman Empire at this time were due to the combination of the motives of technological imperative and internal politics. The study also highlights the role of deterrence and international intervention, as explanatory factors of the absence of open war between Greece and the Ottoman Empire, but also as factors that led to the outbreak of armed confrontations in the form of guerrilla uprisings during the period under examination.
