The Effect of Facebook and Instagram on Destination Development in Pondicherry

This study explores the impact of social media platforms, particularly Facebook and Instagram, on the evolution of Pondicherry as a prominent tourist destination. Through qualitative analysis of user-generated content, including posts, comments, and visual media, the research identifies key themes and narratives that shape tourists' attitudes, behaviours, and the area's economic landscape. Findings reveal that social media significantly enhances Pondicherry's visibility, driving increased tourism and benefiting local businesses, especially in the hospitality and retail sectors. However, challenges such as over-tourism and cultural commodification are also noted, highlighting the need for sustainable tourism practices. The study offers practical insights for destination management organisations, local businesses, and policymakers, emphasising strategies to maximise social media's positive impacts while mitigating its drawbacks. Focusing on Pondicherry, this research contributes a nuanced understanding of digital media's role in destination development, providing valuable lessons for similar destinations worldwide. Limitations include the study's focus on Facebook and Instagram, data constraints, and the temporal nature of social media trends.
