AMBEDKARITE POLITICAL THEORY FROM THE MARXIST LENS: GAIL OMVEDT'S CONTRIBUTIONS
This paper explores the intersection of Ambedkarite political theory and Marxism through the lens of Gail Omvedt's scholarly contributions. Gail Omvedt, a pioneering sociologist and historian, extensively analyzed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s work, particularly focusing on his engagement with caste oppression and social justice. Omvedt’s interpretation of Ambedkar's ideas provides a nuanced perspective on how Marxist theory can be integrated with Ambedkarite thought, especially in the context of caste and class struggles in India. By situating Ambedkar's critique of Brahmanism and his advocacy for the rights of Dalits within a broader Marxist framework, Omvedt highlights the complementary aspects of both ideologies while also addressing their divergences. This study examines Omvedt’s key works, including "Dalits and the Democratic Revolution" and "Ambedkar: Towards an Enlightened India," to understand how she reinterpreted Ambedkar's vision in light of Marxist principles. Omvedt’s contributions are crucial in expanding the theoretical horizons of both Marxism and Ambedkarite thought, offering a comprehensive approach to addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by marginalized communities in India. Her work underscores the importance of integrating class and caste analysis for a more inclusive and effective political strategy. This paper thus aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on social justice and political theory in India, by critically engaging with Gail Omvedt's synthesis of Ambedkarite and Marxist ideologies.
