The Role of Public Expenditure on Sports in Economic Growth: Evidence from Burkina Faso

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the impact of the components of public spending on sports economic growth in Burkina Faso. The autoregressive distributed lag model analysis approach was used to analyze the impact of these expenditures on economic growth in Burkina Faso from 1988-2019. Bounds test results suggest that the variables are related in the long run. The results confirm that the sports budget has a positive and significant effect on short- and long-term economic growth up to the 5% threshold in Burkina Faso. Sports investment expenditure has a positive and significant impact on economic growth in the short and long term up to the 1% and 5% levels, respectively. In the long term, this expenditure has a negative and insignificant effect on economic growth. Sports subsidies also have a positive and insignificant effect on economic growth in the short and long terms. Keywords: Sport, public expenditure, economic growth, ARDL, Burkina Faso
