EFFECT OF DRILL AND PRACTICE ON STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT AND RETENTION IN ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE WORK IN TECHNICAL COLLEGES IN YOBE STATE, NIGERIA

This study determined the effect of Drill and Practice on students' achievement and retention in Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work in Technical Colleges in Yobe State, Nigeria. The study had two specific objectives, two research questions which were meant to guide the study and corresponding two null hypotheses. Pre-test, post-test nonequivalent control group Quasi-experimental research design was employed as the design of the study. The population of the study comprises 109 NTC II electrical/electronic students from Technical Colleges (TCs) Yobe state, Nigeria and 35 students were used as the sample of the study. A purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the two Technical Colleges out of eight Technical Colleges for intact classes. Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work Achievement Test (EIMWAT) was used as an instrument for data collection. The EIMWAT was validated by three experts. The internal consistency of the instrument was found to be 0.76 using test-retest method. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (Mean and standard deviation) to answer the research questions. Inferential statistical tool of independent sample t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance using SPSS software. The findings of the study revealed that, Drill and Practice has significant effect on students' achievement and retention in Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work in Technical Colleges in Yobe State, Nigeria. This study therefore, recommended that: teachers, especially those teaching Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work should adopt Drill and Practice to enhance students' achievement and retention in Technical Colleges and workshops and seminars should be organized by ministry of education and related government agencies to enlighten Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work teachers and other technical teachers to improve their knowledge and skills on the use of Drill and Practice.
