Dynamic BIPV Shading Systems: Performance Analysis for High TRL Validation and Market Transfer

This paper evaluates the performance of an innovative, dynamic, and vertically-oriented buildingintegrated photovoltaic (BIPV) shading device. The research is part of a Swiss Pilot and Demonstration project, advancing the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 to 7, with the goal of validating its operational consistency, replicability, and cost-effectiveness for market deployment. The shading slats consist of two-string PV modules, featuring laminated glazing with an outer layer of white satin glass. Two designs are tested using a smallscale mock-up to assess their effectiveness in temperature reduction and energy production: 1) an optimised version with each string connected to a bypass diode, and 2) a standard version where two strings share a single bypass diode. Results show that the optimised design consistently achieves lower module temperatures and higher energy output, with more than a 20% increase during spring and summer. No additional risks are identified, as the pilot installation does not experience extreme temperature or humidity conditions. The first-floor system's specific energy yield is lower due to partial shading, but this impact would have been greater by using standard PV modules, underscoring the need for BIPV-specific expertise for successful implementation.
