Effects of virtual reality technology on balance function for older adults living in nursing homes: Meta analysis

[Objective] To systematically evaluate the effects of Virtual reality (VR) on balance for older adults living in nursing homes. [Methods] Randomized Controlled Trials about the effects of VR on balance for older adults living in nursing homes were searched from PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Cochrane Library, CNKI, WanFang, VIP and SinoMed data from database establishment to November 1, 2023. The meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4 software. [Results] Finally, 14 studies were included with a total sample size of 588 cases. Meta-analysis showed that VR intervention could shorten the time of timed up and go test, prolonged the time of one leg stand test, enhanced the score of berg balance scale, improved gait, strengthened lower limb muscle strength and reduced fear of falling in the elderly. However, no significant effects of walking speed. [Conclusion] Virtual reality technology has obvious effects on balance function, lower limb muscle strength, and fear of falling of the elderly in nursing homes, but the effects on walking speed are unclear and still need further research.
