Integrating Bifacial PV Power Forecasting into Energy Management Systems at High Latitudes

The presented work examines the integration of bifacial photovoltaic (PV) energy production forecasting into an energy management system (EMS) within a mixed-use building located at 60 degrees latitude. The aim is to improve energy efficiency by estimating daily PV energy production in advance, alongside load forecasting and dynamic electricity prices, to optimize energy usage, storage, and grid interactions. A 140 kWp rooftop bifacial PV system, a battery energy storage system (BESS), and an energy hub are featured in this ongoing implementation. The EMS automates forecasted meteorological data collection, performs PV simulations using ray-tracing techniques for precise solar irradiance estimation, and optimizes energy schedules. Preliminary results show promising PV forecast accuracy based on the comparisons made with the real production from the site. This approach aims to reduce carbon emissions, electricity costs, and grid demand during peak hours, supporting both sustainability and cost-saving objectives.
