Finanzamt and Termins in Hamburg
This thesis investigates code-switching between English and German in sponta-neous speech, with a particular focus on second-language (L2) speakers of Ger-man. Drawing on multiple episodes of a podcast focused on life as a foreign woman in Germany featuring two multilingual speakers, the study examines instances where German lexical items or phrases are embedded within English discourse. The analysis explores the prosodic, syntactic, and semantic strategies employed during code-switching as well as potential factors that make code-switching in general as well as specific strategies more likely. The data reveal patterns, which underscore the role of speaker identity, acceptance of code-switching, and the podcast medium. This work contributes to the growing body of research on multilingual practices involving an L2 and offers insights into the interplay between language competence, choice, and performance in informal, conversational contexts.
