The Future of Holocaust Remembrance?

This article critically examines the project “Tell me, Inge …,” a digital application allowing interaction with a virtual Holocaust survivor. As the number of living survivors dwindles, Virtual Interactive Holocaust Survivor Testimonies (VIHSTs) represent a novel approach to Holocaust education. Analysing Inge Auerbacher’s virtual testimony, this article explores the strengths and limitations of using virtual tools for creating/preserving historical memory. While VIHSTs offer accessibility and structured narratives, they present curated versions of survivor experiences, raising concerns about authenticity and representation. Using such technologies requires critical reflection on ethical and historiographical implications in the evolving culture of Holocaust remembrance. The challenges and differences between VIHST and more traditional video and audio-visual testimonies are discussed.
