'Ways of Hearing' Still Lifes
The second volume section – HEARING – listens in to the soundscapes around us. It also discusses scholarly as well as artistic techniques of visually representing sonic experiences. Anna Frieda Kuhn draws on John Berger’s Ways of Seeing (1972) and Pierre Bourdieu’s model of ‘cultural capital’ to discuss both the visual representation of sound and the sonic inferences of visual representation. She does so by closely listening to two very different still lifes: one by the German expressionist Max Beckmann and one by the Dutch baroque artist Jacob Foppens van Es.
