Modelling a realistic in vitro chronic wound biofilm model to test the efficacy of anti-biofilm treatments

Polymicrobial Biofilms are communities of bacteria that grow everywhere around us. When these biofilms grow on chronic wounds they impair the healing of tissues thus increasing patient pain and compromising life style. The Duckworth device is an in vitro device that produces lab based conditions for growing these biofilms, thus helping researchers identify different mechanisms of how these biofilms grow and interact. My work is about optimizing the Duckworth device further to better mimic chronic wound conditions and thus growing biofilms similar to how they grow on chronic wounds.

Abstract

Polymicrobial Biofilms are communities of bacteria that grow everywhere around us. When these biofilms grow on chronic wounds they impair the healing of tissues thus increasing patient pain and compromising life style. The Duckworth device is an in vitro device that produces lab based conditions for growing these biofilms, thus helping researchers identify different mechanisms of how these biofilms grow and interact. My work is about optimizing the Duckworth device further to better mimic chronic wound conditions and thus growing biofilms similar to how they grow on chronic wounds.
