LEXICAL MEANS FOR EXPRESSING ORIENTAL SPIRIT IN K. GIBRAN’S “THE PROPHET”
The article focuses on the analysis of the book “The Prophet” by K. Gibran, an American Lebanese-born author, the book that has an ageless appeal and that combines the wisdom of Christianity and Sufism, bridging the gap between the East and the West. The present paper observes peculiarities of the author’s individual style and lexical means which make this book so closely associated with Oriental wisdom and spirit. The article touches upon the challenges of rendering the “flavour” of the original work on semantic, stylistic and semiotic levels. As a result of the research, the analysis of semantic, meta-semantic levels, as well as stylistic features allowed the authors to identify lexical means for transferring Oriental spirit and elements that could help a translator to solve the problem of creating the impression of authenticity of the text, to convey national and historical flavour in the target language. The article may be useful for translators of K. Gibran’s works. In addition, the theoretical and practical conclusions of this work can be used as a basis for seminars on stylistics, text analysis, pre-translation text analysis, literary translation, and translation theory.
