A 3D printed bio-hybrid optical skin model for light-skin interactions
Skin models are essential tools in biomedical research, enabling the study of human skin structure, function, and interaction with external stimuli. Optical skin models in particular, have been valuable for exploring light-based biomedical applications such as imaging and laser treatments. However, current models have problems in replicating the complex interactions between light, skin, and living cells, especially when studying biological responses to optical stimuli. This project addresses these limitations by developing a 3D-printed bio-hybrid skin model that mimics both the optical and biological properties of human skin. By combining an optically characterized epidermis with a hydrogel-based dermis structure, we aim to accurately simulate the light interactions with skin appendages, such as hair follicles, while integrating living cells to evaluate biological responses. This model provides a more comprehensive platform for investigating photothermal therapies and other light-based skin treatments.
