INVESTIGATION OF STEEL CONCRETE COMPOSITE SLAB BEHAVIOR USING NONLINEAR FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Major Advisor: Sasi Varadhan (Ass. professor) ABSTRACT This thesis focus on the nonlinear finite element (FE) modeling and simulation of composite floor slab system using ABAQUS (2014) software. Steel-concrete composite slabs are composed of normal concrete and profile steel sheet along with nominal reinforcement. The composite slabs were investigated by considering three types of composite slab models with three different grades of concrete (C-20/25, C-25/30, and C-30/37) and loads (50 kN, 60 kN, and 70 kN). The three composite slabs were classified based on trapezoidal profile sheet. To improve the bonding strength of composite slab, shear connectors were provided between profile steel sheet and concrete. From the finite element analysis results, it can be concluded that in all the three grades of concrete, the maximum deflection value occurs in slab-3, when compared to slab-1 and slab-2. The flexural capacity of slab-2 is more when compared to the other two slabs (slab-1 and slab-3) and the flexural capacity of slab-1 is more when compared to slab-3. Thus, slab-2 is better strength and aesthetic appearance when compared to the other two slab types (Slab-1 and slab-3).

Abstract

Major Advisor: Sasi Varadhan (Ass. professor) ABSTRACT This thesis focus on the nonlinear finite element (FE) modeling and simulation of composite floor slab system using ABAQUS (2014) software. Steel-concrete composite slabs are composed of normal concrete and profile steel sheet along with nominal reinforcement.
