Abundance and size distribution of the amphipod Corophium volutator in intertidal mud flats (List, Sylt, Germany)
The amphipod Corophium volutator is a dominant bioturbator in the Wadden Sea, due to its great abundance. We analyzed this abundance and body size distribution of C. volutator, depending on mesh size, freshwater impact and vicinity to the dyke in 48 samples of seven locations at Wadden Sea Station (List, Sylt, Germany) on four days at the end of July 2024. We concluded that a 1000 µm mesh size is not recommended. Freshwater might have an impact but the input of organic material might be more relevant. The influence of proximity to the dyke is inconclusive and more precise data on sediment structure would be required.
