Scaling Time: Z-Boson Lifetime versus the Age of the Universe
This is a short memo illustrating time scales. We take two experimentally confirmed facts: 1. The average lifetime of the Z boson is about 2.5 × 10⁻²⁵ s. 2. The age of the Universe is about 13.8 billion years (≈ 4.35 × 10¹⁷ s). Next we run a thought experiment: imagine that in a certain “Z-scale” one second equals the Z-boson lifetime. We then ask: “How many such Z-seconds fit into the age of the Universe, and what does this interval equal when converted back into familiar human years?”
