RESEARCH PROPOSAL ON ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE, PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND ACADEMIC STAFF PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED CHARTERED PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN WESTERN UGANDA

Organisational Structure, Performance Monitoring, and Academic Staff Performance in Selected Chartered Private Universities in Western Uganda By Silaji Turyamureeba 2022-08-13072 This research proposal examines the interplay between organisational structure, performance monitoring, and academic staff performance within selected chartered private universities in Western Uganda. The study is grounded in the premise that the effectiveness of higher education institutions is significantly influenced by their internal governance frameworks and accountability mechanisms. Specifically, the research investigates how structural arrangements—such as centralization, decentralization, formalization, and hierarchy—affect the roles, motivation, and output of academic staff. It further explores how internal performance monitoring systems, including appraisal mechanisms, quality assurance procedures, and feedback loops, influence academic productivity and institutional alignment. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with academic leaders and quantitative analysis of staff performance indicators. A purposive sample of deans, heads of department, and senior lecturers from two chartered private universities in Western Uganda will be engaged to provide experiential insights into the governance-performance nexus. Findings from this research are expected to inform university management and policymakers on how to reconfigure internal structures and enhance performance monitoring practices to promote academic excellence, staff retention, and institutional sustainability. The study contributes to the broader discourse on higher education governance in low- and middle-income countries, with specific relevance to the Ugandan context. This proposal is submitted to the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies and Research of Kampala International University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Management Science–Education.
