Antiviral Potential of Colombian Plant Extracts: Insights from a Scoping Review

Given the long-standing use of medicinal plants to treat both infectious and non-infectious diseases, and the fact that approximately 25% of current pharmaceuticals are plant-derived, the potential of plant-based products for drug discovery remains significant. This is particularly relevant in Colombia, which, with over 45,000 plant species, offers a vast and largely untapped reservoir of bioactive compounds. In response to this scenario, a scoping review was conducted to systematically identify and analyze all published studies addressing the following key aspects: (1) the most frequently studied plant species with antiviral potential; (2) the characteristics of plant extracts evaluated for antiviral activity; and (3) the range of viruses against which these extracts demonstrated biological activity.
