CARE-KOA

Effect of the CARE-KOA Program on Knee Osteoarthritis The CARE-KOA program is a structured rehabilitation protocol that emphasizes core muscle activation and kinetic chain integration for individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Recent research indicates that this approach offers several clinically meaningful benefits: Pain Reduction: Participants experienced significant reductions in pain both at rest and during activity, as measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and patient-reported outcomes (KOOS Pain subscale). Improved Function: The program led to notable improvements in daily functional activities, such as stair climbing, sit-to-stand performance, walking, and timed up-and-go tests. These gains reflect enhanced mobility and independence in daily life. Enhanced Core Endurance: There was a measurable increase in core endurance, which supports better trunk and pelvic stability. This stability helps reduce excessive strain on the knee joint and optimizes movement patterns. Muscle Strength Gains: Significant improvements were observed in the strength of the knee extensors (affected side) and flexors (unaffected side), contributing to better joint support and function. Quality of Life: Patient-reported outcomes showed improvements in overall quality of life, reflecting the program’s holistic benefits beyond pain and function alone. The CARE-KOA program distinguishes itself from traditional rehabilitation by focusing not only on quadriceps strengthening but also on core muscle activation. This integrated approach helps distribute load more efficiently across the knee joint, thereby reducing pain and improving function. While these findings are promising, longer-term studies with larger sample sizes are recommended to confirm and optimize the program’s benefits
