Identity and the Social Construction of Reputation in World Politics
We study how group identity shapes the reputational inferences that observers draw about other actors in world politics. Our argument is that the lens of identity provides a powerful filter through which actors view events and update their beliefs about others. Our experiment builds on our descriptive survey and uses a repeated measures design to test implications of our theory in a setting where we “switch” a real country from ingroup to outgroup.
