A Forest Promenade : Enabling Cooler Microclimates in Maillardville, Coquitlam

This project is situated in a landscape where quality of life is pushed aside for the efficiency of cars, where summer heat threatens the life of the impoverished, young and old; having no choice but to move through it to meet their daily needs. How can this impervious fabric be healed with healthy soil? I performed five preliminary soil tests of 60cm depth across the streets and parking lots of Maillardville. I analyzed the soil samples with help from UBC’s Soil Science department and determined that the soil was salvageable rather than needing replacement These tests informed the design proposal which revolves on creating a walkable pedestrian network, emphasizing a continuous shade canopy as vulnerable users frequent their daily needs in the summer months of year. Three test plot sites were then the focus of the design proposal, an initial first step to build leverage and willpower for the larger funding required for the promenade at a neighbourhood scale.
