Hybrid Inverters Integrated Dipoles: Design Methodology and Realization

A novel uniplanar parasitic-coupled series-fed collinear dipole array, namely, hybrid inverters integrated dipoles (HIIDs), is introduced to attain high-gain, omnidirectional radiation with enhanced bandwidth. By integrating hybrid inverters (HIs), coupling gaps are introduced between adjacent series-fed half-wavelength dipoles. These HIs also serve as phase reversals, allowing in-phase excitation via parasitic coupling, thereby facilitating wideband operation within a uniplanar configuration. The HIID array topology is illustrated, and the practical realization of HI, along with its corresponding geometric parameter derivations, is presented. To validate the concept, a three-element HIID array is constructed and experimentally tested. The measured results demonstrate that, without the necessity for additional matching feedlines, the HIID array exhibits a broad −10-dB impedance bandwidth of 17.1% and an overlapping 1-dB gain variation bandwidth of 13.2% both in fraction, while maintaining a high gain of 7.41 dBi. The HIID array exhibits several notable advantages, including a uniplanar configuration, simplicity in structure, high gain, wideband capabilities, and superior roundness, making it a promising candidate for various space-limited wireless terminal platforms.
