Novel DABCO-Derived\nIonic Liquids for Liquid Desiccant\nAir Conditioning

Conventional air conditioners are\ninefficient, especially in hot\nand humid areas, to take water away from the moisture-rich air since\nthis causes higher energy consumption. Liquid desiccant air-conditioning\n(LDAC) systems represent a promising alternative due to their effective\ntemperature- and humidity-independent control with energy-saving potential.\nIonic liquids (ILs) are considered desiccant substitutes for traditional\nhalide salts with better performance and no metal corrosion. This\nstudy introduced the synthesis and structure characterization of novel\nILs with cations based on 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and\nanions derived from trialkylphosphate. The corrosion behavior of copper\nand aluminum in these IL solutions was studied with an electrochemical\ntest. The resulting ionic liquids were strongly hygroscopic and antimicrobial\nwhile showing much lower corrosivity with no risk of crystallization.\nThese advantages made DABCO-derived ILs the potential liquid desiccants\nof the next generation.
