Advanced Anti-icing\nand Deicing Strategies for Overhead\nPower Transmission Lines Based on Giant Magnetocaloric Effect of La0.7Ca0.254Sr0.046MnO3
Perovskite manganates (AMnO3) exhibit diverse\nstructural,\nthermal, electrical, and magnetic properties. Their strong magnetocaloric\neffect (MCE) near the Curie temperature (<i>T</i>C) makes them ideal for magnetic-thermal anti-icing and deicing in\npower transmission lines. Below <i>T</i>C, ferromagnetic\nAMnO3 produces heat through multiple mechanisms, with the\nchanging magnetic field induced by the strong AC current, causing\nheat through magnetic hysteresis and eddy currents, alongside the\ndirect MCE. Above <i>T</i>C, no heating is generated,\nas MCE is unfavorable, thus preventing additional energy loss at elevated\ntemperatures. In this work, La0.7Ca0.254Sr0.046MnO3 with <i>T</i>C close\nto 0 °C were synthesized by solid-state reaction. It is found\nthat particle size >10 μm is beneficial for a large MCE,\nbased\non the results of particle size dependence of MCE. The resulting maximum\nmagnetic entropy change at 277 K is 7.69 J·kg–1·K–1, and an adiabatic temperature change\nof 3.87 K at 277 K is achieved under 5 T. The prototype cable is fabricated\nusing a well-established wire drawing process. A climate-simulation\nchamber is employed for the anti-icing and deicing experiments. The\nprototype cables demonstrated a strong capability for deicing and\nanti-icing. This simple and cost-effective prototype cable shows significant\npotential for mitigating the icing problem of overhead high-voltage\npower transmission lines.
