Evaluation of the Positive Impact on CO2 Emission and Safety Using Concrete Pavements in Italian Tunnels

The paper estimates the total energy savings (MW/year) and the corresponding reduction of CO2 emissions, in tons of oil equivalent (toe), obtainable in the Italian tunnels, replacing asphalt pavements with concrete ones, highlighting how concrete can contribute in: • reaching the 2020 EU target of cutting emissions by 20% from 1990 levels • supporting climate change mitigation and safety in road tunnels.
