Nausea and comfort in tilting trains: Possible regression models for nausea
Ride comfort, nausea and train speed in curves are some of the main issues of tilting trains. Higher speeds may reduce comfort due to higher lateral forces in curves. Tilting trains reduce perceived lateral acceleration by tilting the car body inwards in curves. However, it seems that strong tilt motions provoke nausea. In order to optimise the total performance of tilting trains, it is necessary to know the influence from speed, lateral and vertical accelerations and angular rotations on ride comfort and nausea as well as train performance. This paper describes a test in Norway with a new tilting train and proposes that a net motion dose of roll velocity, i.e. a motion dose with leakage (outflow of accumulated dose), is the main source for nausea provocation.
