Urban Logistics in Africa: An Analytical Approach to Some Urban Models

Sustainable urban logistics, as the management of the flow of goods and services, is of great importance in government policies, given its role in reducing urban congestion and minimizing undesirable environmental impacts as result to the industrial and technological revolution. African countries face numerous and diverse urban challenges, prompting them to adopt various strategies and policies to address these challenges, most notably by activating the role of urban logistics. Therefore, this study aims to provide an analytical approach to some urban logistics models in Africa, through a review of a selection of these models. By highlighting some African achievements in urban logistics and the most significant challenges they face, especially given the limited number of Arabic studies related to the African continent in general and urban logistics in particular. The statistics and data were collected from international and local reports and relevant studies. The study reaches a number of conclusions: most notably that urban expansion necessarily requires improving the quality of urban logistics. This depends on the ability of countries to manage urban expansion, provide transportation, energy and water services in a balanced manner between major and minor centers, and direct investments towards smart infrastructure in light of the challenges posed by sustainable development
