Patients with Different Colonic Disorders

Background: Bowel disorders, like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), are common and affect many people worldwide. Bowel ultrasound (US) showed significant prognostic and valuable results for diagnosing bowel disorders. Moreover, computed tomography enterography (CTE) has been extensively used as a valuable diagnostic aid for assessing small bowel disease.Aims of the study: The study aimed to evaluate the role of bowel US and CTE in the diagnosis of Egyptian patients with different colonic disorders.Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2022 to June 2023, comprising fifty patients who presented clinical symptoms consistent with IBS based on the Rome IV Diagnostic Criteria for IBS. The results obtained from bowel ultrasound and computed tomography were compared with those revealed by endoscopic examination and biopsy. Results: Our study revealed that CTE had a sensitivity of 87.5%, specificity of 88%, PPV of 58.3%, NPV of 97.4%, and accuracy of 88% in diagnosing abnormal bowel lesions. Additionally, bowel US had a sensitivity of 87.5%, specificity of 85.7%, PPV of 53.8%, NPV of 97.3%, and accuracy of 86% in diagnosing abnormal bowel lesions. Additionally, CTE showed significant good agreement (k = 0.62) between bowel US and biopsy in the diagnosis of abnormal bowel lesions. Conclusion: Both CT and US could be used to detect different colonic lesions with high sensitivity and specificity in symptomatic patients who showed positive IBS according to Rome IV criteria.
