UV Protection and Anti-Photo ageing Activity of Medicinal Plants: A Systematic Review
Introduction: Excessive UV irradiation can damage skin extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, like collagen, that are responsible for the tense and beautiful appearance of the skin; decrease hydration levels; and increase keratin layer thickness. UV also affects collagen production from fibroblasts. Method: According to research criteria, from January 2020 to December 2023 we searched for articles in PubMed and MDPI through keywords: Anti-wrinkle, antiwrinkle, skin wrinkle, wrinkle, skin, photoageing, UV-protection, UV Protection, anti-age, ageing, solar ageing, skin photoageing, anti-photoageing, anti photoageing, anti photo age, skin rejuvenation, plant, collagen, and medicinal plant. Result: Included papers, n = 117. We classified the plants according to bioactivities of the plant, like MAPK/AP-1, NF-κB, TGF-β, antioxidant pathways, etc. Conclusion: Medicinal plants are involved in cosmetology as potential anti-ageing products. Panax ginseng is one of the most widely used medicinal plants; this is attributed to its content of ginsenosides with anti-ageing activity. Registration: This review is not registered in PROSPERO.
