A Comparative Study of Cerium oxide nanoparticle (CeO2-NPs)Synthesized by Green and Chemical Methods

This study concerns on comparing the optical, structural and morphological properties, and the bio-inhibitory efficacy of cerium oxide nanoparticles prepared by green and chemical methods. Green synthesis of (CeO2NPs) was performed via Mentha arvensis plant extract as a reducing agent during Green synthesis of (CeO2NPs) was performed via Mentha arvensis plant extract as a reducing agent during the chemical synthesis of CeO2NPs was carried out sing sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution by the hydrothermal method . The optical, compositional, morphological and elemental properties of the prepared nanoparticles were investigated using UV-Vis, XRD, FESEM, EDX and FT-IR techniques and the comparative results were determined. The chemical synthesis showed a higher absorption peak wavelength ( λmax=311 nm) compared to the green synthesis ( λmax=298 nm). The XRD pattern showed the polycrystalline nature of the cerium oxide particles prepared by both methods. The existence of metal oxide was also confirmed by FT-IR analysis. It was found by FESEM that bio-synthesized (CeO2NPs) The nanoparticles exhibit a cluster-shaped, with an average particle diameter measuring 20 nanometers while chemical synthesis (CeO2NPs) have a spherical shape morphology with an average particle size of 35 nm. However, cerium oxide nanoparticles prepared by the green method were more biologically active than those prepared by the chemical method in inhibiting both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and the results indicated a high rate of inhibition.
