Proposed Streetscape Design Indicators to Enhance Livability, Accessibility, and Aesthetics in Urban Environments - The Case of Al Corniche Street in New Mansoura City, Egypt
Streets play a fundamental role in the urban landscape, serving as multifunctional spaces that accommodate social interactions, commerce, culture, and diverse modes of transportation. There is a lack of clearly defined evidence-based indicators for good streetscape design that can be practically applied to improve the quality, functionality, and aesthetics of urban streets in newly developed Egyptian cities. This gap hinders planners and designers’ ability to create people-centered, sustainable streets that foster social interaction and meet the needs of diverse users. The main objective of this article is to define the indicators of a good streetscape design based on a thorough literature review and apply them to one of the streets of New Mansoura City. Studies published between 2006 and 2024 were considered relevant and reviewed. A questionnaire was distributed to reveal the current situation of Al-corniche Street in New Mansoura City from the street users' views. The findings show that good streetscape design significantly predicts neighborhood contentment and Accessibility, even when allowing for the interaction of socio-demographic variables. The Design principles for sustainable social interaction in the streetscape focus on four aspects: Usefulness, Safety, Comfort, and Interest. A well-designed streetscape is a critical component of urban design.
