Synthesis, identification and investigation the biological efficacy of new Schiff base complexes made from 4-pyridinecarbaldehyde and sulfonic acid
4-pyridinecarbaldehyde was condensed with 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid to form a new Schiff base ligand. The Schiff base ligand formed metal complexes with different binary metal salts (Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd). The complexes general formula, [M(L)2(H2O)2], was identified using thermogravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, elemental analyses, atomic absorption of metallic elements, molar conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility. While the copper complex produced a distorted octahedral shape, the geometric shapes suggested conventional octahedrons. The antibacterial activity of all metal complexes was greater than that of the free Schiff base ligand in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, as representative Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.4-pyridinecarbaldehyde was condensed with 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid to form a new Schiff base ligand.
