Hospital Readmission After Ambulatory Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Incidence and Predictors
Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is popular nowadays and with the increasing number of operations a one-day surgery was performed widely for the sake of reducing the costs and hospital stay, however these benefits would be lost if the patient was readmitted in the early follow up of the operation. assessment of the readmission to improve the patient selection and perioperative outcomeMethods: data collected from 1/2022 to 9/2025 from hospital records showing the patient revisits and readmissions in the first 30 days following surgeryResults: data of 270 patients were collected, 69 males and 201 females, among those 212 were submitted to laparoscopic cholecystectomy only while 57 had an additional intraoperative cholangiogram and only one patient had CBD exploration. 23% of the total readmissions was due to surgical causes and postoperative pain was the second cause with 5.9% and other non-surgical causes with lower percentages. Conclusion: the rate of readmission in ambulatory cholecystectomy is very low
