Studies on bioactive natural products from marine actinomycetes and evaluated some biotechnological applications
Marine actinomycetes are a source of bioactive natural products which are abundant and diverse with exceptional medicinal and pharmacological significance. They biosynthesize structurally diverse metabolites including peptides, alkaloids, terpenes, fatty acids, pigments and enzymes many of which exhibit strong antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, anticancer, immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory actions. Their use in doing things against multidrug-resistant pathogens underscores the importance of exploiting them in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. The developments in isolation technique such as enrichment culture, pretreatment technique, and selective media have resulted in identification of new strains with unique metabolic capabilities. Moreover, advances in sequencing technology, genome mining, and bioinformatics have remarkably enhanced taxonomic classification and metabolite identification that have simplified identification of new therapeutic agents. All these innovations together put the marine actinomycetes into the spotlight as a promising source to create new drugs and industrial uses. This review delves into their biological potential and biotechnological potential and their significance regarding global health and pharmaceutical issues.
