Scoping the Decade: Evaluating Type 1 Thyroplasty Results in the Last 10 Years
We present the outcomes of various implant materials used in type 1 thyroplasty over the past decade. The primary objective of this review was to conduct a comprehensive comparison of the most IntroductIonUnilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is the most common cause of glottic insufficiency. The number of patients with UVFP is estimated to reach 0.41-0.51% of the total population. In patients with dysphonia, in 83.6% there was unilateral vocal plica paralysis. 1,2The main cause of UVFP is iatrogenic, recurrent damage to the laryngeal nerve at the time of surgery.Other most frequent noniatrogenic causes are malignant, traumatic, neurological, inflammatory, infectious, and idiopathic diseases. 2ype 1 thyroplasty is a technique first described by Isshiki et al. in 1974 for the management of symptomatic glottic insufficiency. 3 The aim of this procedure is to medialize an excessively lateralized or atrophic vocal fold by placing an implant lateral to the vocal fold through a window in the thyroid cartilage. 4,5Unlike a vocal fold injection augmentation, which employs temporary filler materials to achieve similar outcomes through a less invasive approach, the type 1 thyroplasty uses nonabsorbable materials to achieve longterm or permanent vocal fold medialization. 5Medialization using laryngeal implants has been shown to improve the voice handicap index (VHI) and perceptual voice measures, as well as acoustic parameters of the voice. 6,7
