“Notes on the Origin and Aversion of Painful Attacks”: Texts by Senior Paramedic V. F. Chupov about P. K. Pakhtusov’s Expedition to Novaya Zemlya in 1834—1835
The article provides a comparative analysis of the “Notes” by V. F. Chupov (1834—1835) and “Notes by paramedic V. F. Chupov on the health of the participants in Pakhtusov’s second Novaya Zemlya expedition” (1836). The author of this article found that the “Notes” by V. F. Chupov and “Note by paramedic V. F. Chupov on the health of the participants in Pakhtusov’s second Novaya Zemlya expedition” largely repeat each other, but also have a number of differences, so it was decided to conduct a comparative analysis of these sources, as well as give our own assessment of the facts contained in them. The study used general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, and the method of comparative analysis of sources. The materials for the article were the published “Notes” and “Note ...”, as well as documents of the State Archives of the Arkhangelsk Region (GAAO). Comparative analysis of sources authored by V. F. Chupov is carried out in historical science for the first time. “Notes” of V. F. Chupov (1834—1835) and “Note of the paramedic V. F. Chupov on the health of the participants of the second Novaya Zemlya expedition of Pakhtusov” (1836) complete the picture of scientific and industrial development of the Arctic, due to the information they contain about the methods of human adaptation to the Arctic climate. An attempt was made to find out how V. F. Chupov acquired knowledge about the treatment of scurvy.
