Be your own bodyguard

The immune system is arguably the most sophisticated security system in your body, and understanding it is key to your well-being. My piece explores its fascinating architecture—from the rapid, general defences of innate immunity to the intelligent memory of the adaptive response—introducing the cellular mechanisms that tirelessly keep us safe. Beyond the basics, it answers the question of how we strengthen our immune system by highlighting three essential strategies: developing an optimal diet, managing stress and the importance of receiving vaccinations to confidently support your body’s defences.“My experiences, from shadowing a GP and observing PhD students in the lab to volunteering in hospitals, inspire me to believe that science can transform lives when made accessible. This competition not only allows me to pursue my love for immunology but also to prove that science should be for everyone.” - Hiu Wai Fan, University of Bristol
