Searching for long-lived axion-like particles via displaced vertices at the HL-LHC

Abstract Axion-like particles (ALPs) are well-motivated extensions of the standard model (SM) that appear in numerous new physics scenarios. In this paper, we concentrate on searches for long-lived ALPs predicted by the photophobic scenario at the HL-LHC with the center-of-mass energy $$\sqrt{s}=14$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msqrt> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> </mml:msqrt> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>14</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> TeV and the integrated luminosity $${\mathcal {L}}=3~\hbox {ab}^{-1}.$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>L</mml:mi> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>3</mml:mn> <mml:mspace/> <mml:msup> <mml:mtext>ab</mml:mtext> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>.</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> We consider the process $$pp \rightarrow \gamma a$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>p</mml:mi> <mml:mi>p</mml:mi> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:mi>γ</mml:mi> <mml:mi>a</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> with the ALP a decaying into a pair of displaced charged leptons and perform a detailed analysis of two types of signals: "Equation missing" and $$.$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mo>.</mml:mo> </mml:math> For the "Equation missing" signal, we find that the prospective sensitivities of the HL-LHC can reach $$g_{aWW}\in [8.72 \times 10^{-3}, 6.42 \times 10^{-2}]$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>g</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>aWW</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>∈</mml:mo> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>[</mml:mo> <mml:mn>8.72</mml:mn> <mml:mo>×</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>3</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mn>6.42</mml:mn> <mml:mo>×</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>]</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> $$\hbox {TeV}^{-1}$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mtext>TeV</mml:mtext> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:math> for the ALP mass $$m_a \in [4, 10]$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>m</mml:mi> <mml:mi>a</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>∈</mml:mo> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>[</mml:mo> <mml:mn>4</mml:mn> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mo>]</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> GeV.
