The Role of Endobronchial Ultrasound as an Adjuvant for Endobronchial Tumor Debulking
A BSTRACT Endobronchial tumors often present with life-threatening central airway obstruction, producing disabling symptoms and procedural challenges. Conventional rigid bronchoscopy with laser, cryotherapy, or mechanical debulking remains the mainstay of management but carries risks of bleeding, incomplete clearance, and injury to adjacent structures. The integration of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) has redefined procedural safety by providing real-time imaging of airway wall layers, tumor margins, and neighboring vasculature. EBUS serves not only as a diagnostic and staging tool but also as a periprocedural guide that enhances precision and reduces complications. Emerging innovations such as three-dimensional imaging and artificial-intelligence-assisted navigation are poised to further expand its role in modern interventional pulmonology.
