Study on moisture management attributes of cut-protective fabric produced using filament twisted hybrid yarn

Purpose The capability of a fabric used for clothing to effectively transfer and evaporate moisture is a critical and expected attribute. Effective moisture management in clothing enhances the comfort of the wearer. This research aims to address the query by exploring how filament twisted yarn made fabric affects the moisture management attributes of cut-protective clothing. Design/methodology/approach Filament twisted yarns with linear densities of 98, 74, 59, 49 and 39 Tex were manufactured by using stainless steel/glass filament thread as the core, high-performance polyethylene, and polyester filament thread as the outer and inner sheath, respectively. The 12 sets of hybrid woven fabric samples with 6-end satin weaving design with consistent areal weight of 200 g/m2 were prepared on a rapier loom machine. According to AATCC 195-2011, the moisture management tester evaluated the parameters such as wetting duration, spreading rate, absorption speed, wetting radius, one-way transport capacity and overall moisture management ability of each sample. Findings Fabric produced with higher content of core filament (stainless steel/glass) with S-Z twisted yarn performed better regarding overall moisture management capacity, spreading speed, absorption rate, maximum wetted radius and one-way transport capacity, and influenced it statistically significantly. Originality/value Comfort requires moisture control, especially in cut-protective clothing. Moisture-wicking materials and systems improve comfort and health by evaporating perspiration, managing temperature and decreasing skin irritation. This enhances performance, safety and productivity in difficult work situations while improving user well-being.
