Why Cs 2 O Is a Strong Oxidizer
A systematic study of the reaction of Cs2O with various elements in closed systems shows that Cs2O oxidizes most elements to cesium oxidometalates. By this, the new compounds Cs6(WO4)(WO5), Cs4MO4 (M = Ti, Ge, Ce, Hf), Cs2CeO3, Cs7(CrO4)2, and Cs3MO2 (M = Cu, Co, Ni, Ag) were prepared, and their crystal structures were established by X-ray diffraction methods. The thermal behavior of Cs2O and oxidometalates was investigated. Cs2O shows congruent melting behavior at 269 °C in a closed silver ampule. The reaction behavior can be explained within the thermodynamic model of the Ellingham diagrams.
