Veno-venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support in Multi-organ Dysfunction Syndrome: Insights from a Case Series with Favorable Outcomes
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support system that provides cardiopulmonary support, mainly pulmonary support via veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO).The use of VV-ECMO has increased recently due to advancements in technology and the availability of trained centers, especially for patients experiencing advanced respiratory failure that is refractory to conventional mechanical ventilation.Recently, the indications for VV-ECMO have also been expanding.Several disease conditions can rapidly progress to multiple organ damage, particularly acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which causes severe tissue hypoxia. It has been observed that the timely initiation of VV-ECMO improves tissue oxygenation through extracorporeal support, halting the progression of multiple organ failure. This intervention has been shown to reduce ICU and overall hospital stays by promoting the early recovery of organ function. In this case series, we aim to emphasize our insights on how early initiation of VV-ECMO for heterogeneous indications has helped us overcome multiple organ dysfunction with significantly favorable outcomes.
