Study on modal damping characteristics of transmission line-vibration damper system

To investigate the damping characteristics of the transmission line-vibration damper system, a typical damper installed on the transmission line is modeled as a local external damping device, and a one-dimensional continuous string model with additional discrete elements is developed. The characteristic frequency equation in the complex domain is derived, followed by the asymptotic expression for the modal damping ratio. The effect of the vibration damper's structural and installation parameters on the modal damping ratio is analyzed to optimize system performance. Simulation results show that, within the range of engineering parameters, the modal damping ratio first increases and then decreases as the damper's damping ratio increases, reaching a distinct maximum. As the damper's mass ratio increases, the modal damping ratio increases monotonically. The system achieves the optimal modal damping ratio when the frequency ratio of the damper is 1.71. The maximum modal damping ratio is achieved by installing the external damper at the position corresponding to each order vibration wave belly. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the design of aeolian vibration prevention measures for overhead conductors.
