Mechanical interpretation and generalization of the modified Mohr–Coulomb model for ductile fracture prediction

Abstract Objectives This work aims to revisit the physical interpretation of the Modified Mohr–Coulomb (MMC) model for ductile fracture prediction. Methods The MMC model is analyzed from a mechanical perspective by decomposing its terms into the contributions of hydrostatic stress, maximum shear stress, and deformation mode. Results It is shown that the MMC model characterizes the combined effects of stress triaxiality and Lode parameter on damage evolution, and a generalized fracture criterion with physically motivated weighting functions is proposed. Conclusion The clarified interpretation and generalized formulation provide a physically transparent framework for ductile fracture prediction in metal forming processes.
