Comprehensive bibliometric analysis of assisted reproduction–related ectopic pregnancy

Objective: This study aimed to track the evolution of research on assisted reproductive technology (ART)–related ectopic pregnancy (EP) from 1990–2023 using Web of Science data, identify existing gaps, and highlight collaborative patterns that support European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology’s evidence-based ART optimization goals. Methods: Data were extracted from Web of Science (1982–2024) and analyzed using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R-bibliometrix. Publications were screened for quality, focusing on spatial and temporal trends, authorship patterns, institutional networks, journal influence, and keyword co-occurrence to delineate research hotspots and pathways of knowledge diffusion. Results: Publications increased after 2011; output was highest during 2019–2022. China (25.6%) and the United States (14.3%) produced the most studies, forming distinct collaborative clusters shaped by geography and institutional relationships. Core journals ( Fertility and Sterility , Human Reproduction ) anchored reproductive medicine discourse; imaging and clinical journals contributed to multidisciplinary diagnostic advances. Citation bursts highlighted the reduced EP risk associated with frozen-thawed embryo transfer and the predictive value of endometrial thickness. Two major keyword clusters were identified: therapeutic strategies (e.g., methotrexate) and reproductive outcomes (e.g., live birth). Recent trends emphasized recurrent implantation failure and frozen embryo transfer as focal points. Conclusions: ART-EP research centers on embryo migration, donor gametes, and transfer techniques. Key risks include tubal dysfunction and procedural variables. Emerging priorities comprise protocol refinement and greater understanding of EP pathogenesis. These findings inform clinical practice, resource planning, and international collaboration to address ART-EP challenges, balancing reproductive success and cost-efficiency. Policymakers can use these insights to refine ART safety and efficacy.
