Antibiotic‐Inspired Molecular Engineering Enables Wide‐Temperature Aqueous Zinc‐Ion Batteries with Dual‐Interface Regulation

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) operating across wide temperatures are critically needed for practical applications, yet current strategies predominantly address single-side electrode issues with limited adaptability to extreme temperatures. Herein, a chloramphenicol (Chl)-modified deep eutectic electrolyte is constructed that synchronously regulates anode/cathode interfacial chemistry through synergistic multifunctional group effects: amino/nitro groups trigger three-electron redox reactions at cathodes to reduce interfacial barriers and enhance Zn2⁺ diffusion, while hydroxyl/nitro groups reconstruct Zn2⁺ solvation sheaths to suppress free/bound water activity and enable targeted adsorption at anode tips for dendrite inhibition. Consequently, Zn||Zn symmetric cells achieve record-breaking cyclability across -30-50 °C (>4000 h at 25 °C, >2200 h at -30 °C, >3000 h at 50 °C). Paired with V2O5 cathodes, full cells retain 80% capacity after 2000 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 while delivering >200 mAh g-1 under extreme temperatures.

Abstract

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) operating across wide temperatures are critically needed for practical applications, yet current strategies predominantly address single-side electrode issues with limited adaptability to extreme temperatures. Herein, a chloramphenicol (Chl)-modified deep eutectic electrolyte is constructed that synchronously regulates anode/cathode interfacial chemistry through synergistic multifunctional group effects: amino/nitro groups trigger three-electron redox reactions at cathodes to reduce interfacial barriers and enhance Zn2⁺ diffusion, while hydroxyl/nitro groups reconstruct Zn2⁺ solvation sheaths to suppress free/bound water activity and enable targeted adsorption at anode tips for dendrite inhibition. Consequently, Zn||Zn symmetric cells achieve record-breaking cyclability across -30-50 °C (>4000 h at 25 °C, >2200 h at -30 °C, >3000 h at 50 °C). Paired with V2O5 cathodes, full cells retain 80% capacity after 2000 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 while delivering >200 mAh g-1 under extreme temperatures.
