Impact of Quench Mixing Devices on Hydrogen Utilization in Multi Bed Trickle Bed Hydroprocessing Reactors: Design, Performance, and Industrial Implications
Efficient quench-mixing devices play a pivotal role in multi-bed trickle-bed hydroprocessing reactors, ensuring uniform temperature distribution, enhanced phase mixing, and optimal hydrogen utilization. Hydroprocessing reactions are highly exothermic, and localized hotspots can accelerate catalyst deactivation, reduce selectivity, and increase hydrogen consumption. Inter-stage quench systems, through momentum-driven mixing, turbulent eddy diffusion, and interfacial mass transfer, mitigate these challenges by promoting uniform hydrogen distribution and thermal control. This review presents a comprehensive examination of quench-mixing device fundamentals, classifications, industrial designs, computational modelling approaches, and future trends. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact of quench device performance on hydrogen efficiency, demonstrating that optimized designs not only enhance thermal management but also reduce operational hydrogen requirements, lowering refinery costs and improving sustainability. Historical developments, patented systems, and modern multi-zone and compact designs are discussed to highlight best practices and future directions for advancing hydrogen utilization in hydroprocessing reactors.
